Summary

A captivating debut fantasy inspired by the legend of Chang'e, the Chinese moon goddess, in which a young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm。

Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality。 But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind。

Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets。 Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor's son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince。

To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies across the earth and skies。 But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos。

Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting, romantic duology which weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magic—where love vies with honor, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant。

When I read the first chapter I thought this would be a five star read。 The prose are lush and beautiful and I was intrigued as to where this story would take us。 Sadly by midway I was starting to feel some disappointment。 I think this book could have benefited from being split into two books。 This would allow for more time with the characters through the years。 Instead we get little snapshots of their lives and things are rushed come really easy for everyone。 There’s also a love triangle and I When I read the first chapter I thought this would be a five star read。 The prose are lush and beautiful and I was intrigued as to where this story would take us。 Sadly by midway I was starting to feel some disappointment。 I think this book could have benefited from being split into two books。 This would allow for more time with the characters through the years。 Instead we get little snapshots of their lives and things are rushed come really easy for everyone。 There’s also a love triangle and I just wasn’t feeling it。 This book wrapped up nicely but I’m not sure what book two is going to be about。 I can appreciate that this is a debut and I look forward to seeing what the author writes next。 。。。more

So I read this in one day…。while I don’t know what I was exactly expecting it wasn’t this。 Our main character was very enjoyable and I liked her development through the story。 There was plenty of trophs and angst throughout the book and I’m wondering where the second book is going to go。

I could tell from the very beginning of this book that I was going to love it。 Based on the Chinese myth of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess, it combines all the best aspects of epic fantasy and retellings, while keeping the story fresh and surprising。 I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy。 I can’t wait for the sequel and conclusion to this duology, but I love that The Daughter of the Moon Goddess has a satisfying enough conclusion that it could stand on its own。 All around, a I could tell from the very beginning of this book that I was going to love it。 Based on the Chinese myth of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess, it combines all the best aspects of epic fantasy and retellings, while keeping the story fresh and surprising。 I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy。 I can’t wait for the sequel and conclusion to this duology, but I love that The Daughter of the Moon Goddess has a satisfying enough conclusion that it could stand on its own。 All around, an excellent read。 Many thanks to @netgalley and @harpercollins for the advanced copy。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really enjoyed this book! The story and setting were beautiful and I cant wait for the sequel! It was a great adventure and I'm looking forward to see how characters develop in the next book。 Xingyin is very sheltered and naive but grows a lot over the course of the book and becomes a really strong character。 I had a couple of issues with this book, that made it evident it was a debut。 There were a couple of pacing issues, where the book would say something along the lines of "months and year I really enjoyed this book! I absolutely loved this book! It’s one of the best debut novels I’ve read in a while and I can’t wait to read more from this author。 From the very beginning, this book had me hooked。 The writing was beautiful, descriptive and the author was able to fit so much storytelling into a small amount of writing。 What I mean by that is that I couldn’t believe the book wasn’t longer。 A lot happens within the chapters, but none of it feels unnecessary or like filler。 All the writing felt like it was done w I absolutely loved this book! Daughter of the Moon Goddess is a simply captivating novel。 Growing up, my parents would play Chinese fantasy dramas and I would watch in awe at the complex systems of the heavens, the intricate aesthetics and the legends entwined with them that resonated with my soul。 DOTMG encapsulates everything I loved about watching those shows in the form of words。 Presented with fearless yet sensitive characters, folklore and a grand momentous journey, Sue Lynn Tan creates a world of pure escapism。 I ador Daughter of the Moon Goddess is a simply captivating novel。 Growing up, my parents would play Chinese fantasy dramas and I would watch in awe at the complex systems of the heavens, the intricate aesthetics and the legends entwined with them that resonated with my soul。 DOTMG encapsulates everything I loved about watching those shows in the form of words。 Presented with fearless yet sensitive characters, folklore and a grand momentous journey, Sue Lynn Tan creates a world of pure escapism。 I adore this book more than words can express。 。。。more

It's a nice read, I had hoped for a bit more Asian culture weaved into the story telling。 It has a lot of classic YA story。 Banished one seeking freedom, while she learns and trains to become greatness she falls in love with two men who love her back but can't。 What I did like is that the story closes。 I was a bit fearfull to start it as the sequel wasn't out yet, but it doesn't end with a cliffhanger。 It's a nice read, I had hoped for a bit more Asian culture weaved into the story telling。 It has a lot of classic YA story。 Banished one seeking freedom, while she learns and trains to become greatness she falls in love with two men who love her back but can't。 What I did like is that the story closes。 I was a bit fearfull to start it as the sequel wasn't out yet, but it doesn't end with a cliffhanger。 。。。more

3。5/5 Overall, it was not the mythology retelling I expected, by I enjoyed it nonetheless。 It’s beautifully-written, and it was a light and comforting read。 The world building is very true to the Chinese culture。 Though I feel many parts were too cliche, especially the MC’s love interests。 I didn’t expect the book to be this romance heavy, but if you knew this going in, I think you’ll find this book a solid read。

Rating: 5 Stars This book needs to be made into a tv show and I need the next book urgently。 This book ticked all the boxes for me, the characters were great! The main character was strong, vulnerable and smart。 I really enjoyed watching her grow as I turned every page。 The romance was interesting。 I was in between the love interests but Liwei won my heart in the end, for obvious reasons。 I loved the plot, I didn't want to put the book down。 Enjoyment was 10/10!! Absolutely loved this book。 Read like an epic fairytale and felt like it could have been among the classic Chinese myths instead of only being inspired by them。 It packs so much in but never felt rushed, learning about the world along with Xingyin was a constant joy。 I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for the celestial kingdom。 Absolutely loved this book。 Read like an epic fairytale and felt like it could have been among the classic Chinese myths instead of only being inspired by them。 It packs so much in but never felt rushed, learning about the world along with Xingyin was a constant joy。 I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for the celestial kingdom。 。。。more

Overall I loved the imagery and the plot of this book。 The details and world building were lovely。 It had an episodic feel during the middle of the book, focusing on the main characters quests, which some might find dragging but I enjoyed。 The emotional element sometimes felt a bit flat。 Especially the romance or scenes where the main character felt a betray or disappointment, maybe because her hopes or trust in those people hadn’t largely been built up for the reader (they are described but not Overall I loved the imagery and the plot of this book。 The details and world building were lovely。 It had an episodic feel during the middle of the book, focusing on the main characters quests, which some might find dragging but I enjoyed。 The emotional element sometimes felt a bit flat。 Especially the romance or scenes where the main character felt a betray or disappointment, maybe because her hopes or trust in those people hadn’t largely been built up for the reader (they are described but not shown)。 I found it hard to be interested in the main love interests and I think this is largely because her feelings and interest was a bit passive。 There were lots of scenes where they professed love or showed affection and jealousy but few that showed her developing feelings for them。 It felt like she was interested because they were, which made it hard as a reader to understand their charms apart from being available and interested。 I had not read much of the promotion for this book。 I think if I had I would have been more disappointed as it’s really been promoted for the romantic plot。 Overall I did enjoy the book。 I think those interested in it as a romantic escape will be disappointed but it was a beautiful and fun read as a adventure story, with lots of lovely fantasy elements。 I enjoyed the characters growth and her motivation。 I read it because I was interested in a story inspired by myths and legends and for that reason I enjoyed it。 。。。more

I absolutely loved this。 Something about it felt very easy and comforting to fall into and get lost in considering the high fantasy elements/unfamiliar mythology/nearly 500 pages。 Reading this made me realize that the Lunar Chronicles were most likely influenced by the same myths, so I think that's where the familiarity came from for me。 According to the author's bio, she's a fan of Chinese fantasy dramas and I could easily imagine this reinvented into a 25-50 episode drama with gorgeous costume I absolutely loved this。 Something about it felt very easy and comforting to fall into and get lost in considering the high fantasy elements/unfamiliar mythology/nearly 500 pages。 Reading this made me realize that the Lunar Chronicles were most likely influenced by the same myths, so I think that's where the familiarity came from for me。 According to the author's bio, she's a fan of Chinese fantasy dramas and I could easily imagine this reinvented into a 25-50 episode drama with gorgeous costumes and sometimes cheesy effects, or even a graphic novel/webtoon style adaptation。 I think it lends itself to the richness of the world that I can so easily imagine it fleshed out on the screen or through art panels。 I loved this a lot, the ideal escape, I can't wait for more :) 。。。more

I thought this novel just jumped around too much。 The first 100 pages or so were actually very good。 We got to meet Xingyin and learn about why her mother is trapped as the moon goddess。 We were able to see a cute romance (friends to lovers) blossom between Xingyin and the prince。 I thought this was going to be a 5 star read。 But then Xingyin went from one battle or struggle to the next。 The fight scenes seemed to last only a page or two and when the bad guy was defeated, bring out the next one。 There seemed to be no real buildup between the enemies, which left me wanting more。The best way to describe this book would be that it felt like the author was trying to fit too much into one book。 There were so many different plots that it seemed like there were 5 books in one。 What should've been an epic plot twist ended up being predictable and something I just didn't care about。 And then even that got resolved too quickly。Overall this was just a chaotic mess in regards to its plot, BUT if you are looking for a romantic beautiful fantasy novel, you may enjoy this one。 。。。more

Ehhhhhhhh。Our female protagonist is someone who I don't get and confuses me so much as I go through each chapter。 She changes her emotions so fast - faster than Elizabeth Taylor changing clothes in Cleopatra。 One minute she is out for revenge, next minute she is in love with the Prince, then she hates him, then she loves him, then she hates him again。 Oh! Another guy appears half way through the book, does she like him? I think she does。。。 wait, no she loves the Prince。 No wait, she DOESN'T love the Prince。 JK。 She loves the prince。 STOP。 JUST STOP。Next, the girl faints。 A lot。 Does she have a blood disorder? No。 Every time when something becomes too dangerous or too stressful, she legit faints。 Which leads to one of the two men having to revive her and heal her。But this is all okay, you know, because she can fight really well! Oh! And, she can use her magic。 She is never faced with any hardships, she never suffers any loss, she is just too darn perfect to enjoy。 I dislike the Prince as her love interest。 Are they end-game? They seem like it from the amount of will they/won't they that keeps going on in this book。The plot is pretty and yet, 80% of this book is spent on the crappy romance between her and the Prince。 Give me a heroine who is stronger and is not wasting her time on boys and if they love her or not。 I am all for romance in stories, but this was just way, way too much drama for me to enjoy。 。。。more

The descriptions in this are riveting and really immersed me。 I mean it, some books are utterly dry in their descriptions and tend to neglect the plot but this book straddled the line perfectly。 The setting itself is wholly inspired and as someone who previously knew very little about Chinese mythology, I was completed engrossed。 I did find the romance storyline and some other plot elements a little derivative and quite expected but I can look past that because this book really pulled me in。
